An interactive gallery space designed in Unity.

‘The New Gallery’ examines the often unacknowledged environments in which we encounter art.

Through surreal subversions of the typical ‘white cube’ gallery space that draw on the visual and structural language of video games, viewers are encouraged to question the conditions a gallery space imposes upon the art it houses.

Each room of the gallery has its own unique features and ‘visitors’ must consider the qualities of their environment in order to view the art. One room may feature low gravity, whereas the next sees a viewer navigating an impossibly large crowd or leaping between floating platforms.

Though often satirical, this manipulation of the norms of art viewing seeks to draw the act of viewing the art as much into view as the art itself, creating a heightened awareness of how space–and therefore, human design decisions–alter our perception.
